Schneier on Security: Disabling Cars by Remote Control

Schneier on Security: Disabling Cars by Remote Control

This is just too good. It is a great example of where giving others power over your security, which they then centralize in a single place, leads to compromise with nasty failure modes.

In this case, a disgruntled former employee uses a system to disable over 1000 vehicles.

Although the employee decided to disabled a 1000 cars, I know people at OnStar who routinely listen in on GM cars which come equipped with OnStar. In fact, in a case where someone I knew had his Hummer listened in on with a warrant, thus negating the days of planting a listening device in the car since it comes equipped with it!
