The Privacy BlogPrivacy, Security, Cryptography, and Anonymity

My purpose in creating this blog is to address trends and issues in online privacy and security. Having been in the trenches in these areas since around 1992, I bring a very applied, practical, and pragmatic viewpoint to the discussion.

My personal perspective is based in the strong principles of privacy and free speech. These absolutes have been tempered over the years, and especially flagrantly in the World Wide Web, which led me to pursue a career in providing privacy and identity protection services.

With this blog, I hope to help, educate, and spur lively debate around these and related issues. Your feedback is greatly appreciated as I look for the best structure for this blog.

I have been reading about a Deerfield Beach, Florida company called Protexx,Inc. and “googled” (forgive me) it. Seems they have a simple software approach to what looks like a very neat 2048 bit VPN that really does not care what it “wrappers”. If I understand it correctly, the process hides MAC addresses, passwords and login stuff, and does it over wi-fi, network, cable, cell (EVDO) or whatever. Would be interested to read what others have to say about this approach to a really big problem – particularly since 128 SSL has been hacked.

This really looks like spam to me. Looking at the website, it looks like they are not very clear about the nature of their cryptography. They talk about “2048 bit dynamic encryption”. Maybe they are just talking about the public key side of a hybrid crypto system, in which case they need to specify what public key system they are using, what symmetric cypher, and the key lengths of both.

If it is their own crypto system, then I am really worried. It is the number one sign of snake oil. I would never trust any system without many years to detailed published analysis by the best minds in the business.

If any of my readers know more about the company (and don’t just post advertising copy) I would be quite interested to hear it.
